Youngsters suffering from spina bifida, a birth defect affecting of the spinal cord, can forget their troubles for awhile when at spina bifida camp. These camps are designed to meet the specific needs of children afflicted with this disease, with qualified staff are on hand to administer any medical help needed. But it's also about having fun, letting loose and meeting others just like them. Since many children with spina bifida are wheelchair bound, spina bifida camps are completely wheelchair accessible and friendly.
Highlights: Self esteem building is a focal point of any spina bifida program, and the best way to achieve that is to provide plenty of recreational options for kids to partake in. Activities may include arts and crafts, fishing, swimming, boating, woodworking, climbing walls and even dances.
What to Pack: Be sure to pack any of your child's medications or special needs items. Pack comfort items as well, plus comfortable weather-appropriate clothing.
Counselor Certifications: All counselors should be fully trained, comprised of nursing staff and doctors. Volunteers also help out with activities. All should be background checked and certified in their chosen specialty. Nurses should be on staff to administer any medications required or attend to those in need.
