There is no general type of martial arts camp. Each has its own focus and goals and includes distinctive excursions and activities. Lessons in leadership, balance, teamwork and respect remain constant, but some martial arts summer camps emphasize competition, and others focus on individual growth. Usually the martial arts classes are broken up with activities like swimming, museum outings or movies. Occasionally, a camp will combine martial arts classes with a variety of outdoor activities like biking, hiking and kayaking, which makes for a more intense program. The classes themselves tend to combine techniques from the martial arts world, although there are some martial arts camps designed for development in a specific art, such as karate or aikido.
Learning Skills: In addition to self defense, martial arts teach respect, discipline and confidence, which are important skills for kids to learn to help them in their school lives as well as their family and social lives. Healthy living, including exercising, stretching, drinking plenty of water and eating healthy food, is also emphasized in the martial arts.
Medical Considerations: Your child should be in good condition for physical exercise, as martial arts training involves much physical strength and endurance. Make sure to advise the instructors if your child has any health problems such as asthma or mitral valve prolapse.
