When looking for a rock climbing camp, parents should know that they are divided up into indoor rock climbing camps, outdoor camps and camps that offer a little of each. Generally, outdoor rock climbing is recommended for older children and teens, as it is more complex and involves more gear and safety precautions. Some programs include tours of climbing gear factories as well, to allow for a deeper understanding of the sport and its equipment. The majority of camps are coed and divide kids into groups depending on their skill and experience level. Various trips to nearby canyons or caves are to be expected during rocky climbing summer camps, for demonstrations as well as actual practice.
Safety: Make sure that all climbing instructors are licensed professionals and certified in first aid. Climbing can be a hazardous sport, but with the right instructors and reliable equipment, the risk is greatly reduced. Also, when outside for long periods of time, make sure your child knows to apply sunblock to avoid sunburn.
Weather Considerations: Many rock climbing camps focus on outdoor climbing, so choose a time of year that is not too hot, cold or turbulent in order to get the most out of the experience.
