Parents with children who love a good game of chess may be wise to enroll them in chess camp. From overnight camps to day camps, these opportunities build on teamwork, self esteem, leadership and healthy competition. Many camps award kids with trophies and certificates. They can take part in lessons by qualified chess instructors, tournaments, exhibitions and chess problem solving relay events. Summer chess camps typically feature additional outdoor adventures to keep campers active, such as archery, bug hunts, boating, swimming and horseback riding. Behavior management is a big part of chess camps, as instructors help students make wise choices, leading to improved thinking abilities.
What to Pack: Campers should be expected to bring a chess set, a chess clock, sleeping bags and pillows for overnight camps, plenty of comfortable clothing and sneakers.
What to Ask the Camp Director: Are parents welcome? Some camps allow parents to attend the whole session or at least a portion. Many times, summer camps end with a family day where parents and siblings are welcome.
Weather Considerations: Most chess camps are primarily indoors for tournaments and instruction. However, many incorporate outdoor activities too, so be sure to keep an eye on the weather and pack accordingly. Warm locales will require light clothing, while colder locales may require long pants and jackets for outdoor play.
